About Mark Smith

Mark is one of the great-grandchilden of immigrants who came to this country for a better life. After many family members served our country in the military, they came home and went to work in the steel mills which line the rivers of the City of Pittsburgh. He learned from a very young age what real “hard work” is and feels like. Growing up in gritty steel towns gave him the gifts of perspective and humility. It also fostered a genuine dislike for bullies. These gifts are what drove him to become a lawyer and specifically a lawyer who helps injured people. He loves being able to stick up for them against corporate and insurance company bullies.
Mark worked his way through law school. He worked all day and went to school at night to Duquesne University School of Law. He was admitted to practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and has tried cases in many counties in Pennsylvania and the United States District Court for the Western District.

Our clients were the family of a young man who suffered a traumatic brain injury when a concussion went undiagnosed and untreated. Our young, athletic client then suffered a second concussion within weeks of his first one. As a result, his brain swelled and began to bleed. We filed a lawsuit on his behalf against the doctors, health care system and athletic trainers that were responsible for his care. We fought hand in hand with our client and his family for years so that we could help provide a brighter financial future so he will get the best care possible and not have to worry about paying for the medical expenses for a life-time of rehabilitation and medical treatment. Co-counsel: Brendan Lupetin.
This client was 6 years old when the pastor of her church began to groom her so that he could prey on her as she grew older. The physical and sexual abuse started when she turned 10 years old. These unspeakable actions stayed with her for years until she was ready to trust someone to bring her full justice. The criminal justice system did their part and our civil trial gave her full justice. Helping this young woman was incredibly rewarding knowing how grateful she was for having me believe in her and help bring some closure her past. Equally as important, she got to tell her story to give other victims a voice so the violent acts committed upon her would not go without full justice being served.
This client suffered in silence for many years after enduring sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted member of a church and charity. As a child, she felt confused, betrayed and even guilty. Adults failed her; religious organizations failed her. I was not about to let any other adults fail her. After years of litigation and investigating the many cover-ups that occurred in her case, I was able to bring to light the failures that so many committed upon her as a child.
This client was walking along the street she lived on when a tractor trailer attempted to make a turn in an intersection. The tractor trailer driver failed to make the turn safely and he drove over the curb and onto the sidewalk where the woman was walking, striking her and causing broken bones and years of surgery. The trucking company and the tractor trailer driver did not take responsibility for their carelessness so I had to take the fight to them. On the eve of trial, I was able to settle this matter for my innocent client.
When big box trucks and drivers don’t follow the rules of the road, innocent people get badly hurt. This client was minding her own business driving home when company truck made an illegal left hand turn in front of her in an intersection causing a crash. The impact of the crash caused the victim’s foot to be badly broken. Years of surgeries and therapy followed for her. I put the her case together to make sure that she received full compensation for the carelessness of the company and their driver.
Tractor trailers and icy roads do not mix especially when their drivers do not follow the law and slow down. A careless tractor trailer driver drove too fast on an icy, snow-covered bend in the road causing the trailer he was hauling to slide right into the path of my client and his young son. Despite these facts, the tractor trailer company and the driver would not take responsibility for their poor choices and we filed a lawsuit on behalf of this client and his family. We made sure to prove the numerous federal motor vehicle violations the trucking company and their driver committed which caused the victims’ injuries. On the eve of the trial, our client got the justice he deserved along with the knowledge that he had been vindicated.
